Project Summary

About Client

Our client is a British healthcare startup founded in 2020. The company was established by people with medical backgrounds who would like to utilize their knowledge to help others become more proactive and lower the risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) development.

Knowing all of the challenges healthcare professionals have to face in terms of CVD treatment, diagnostics, and prevention, our client was willing to create a digital platform that will simplify the interaction between doctors and patients while keeping it as effective and helpful as in-person consultations.

Client Request

As our client is a startup entering the pre-seed stage, they required professional help with every aspect of the MVP development: from branding to solution architecture, the core algorithm, user interface, and more.

The goal was to build a comprehensive yet easy-to-use web-based solution that patients, doctors, and insurance companies could benefit from.

Based on the available health information (provided by the user themselves and their GP as well), the system should calculate a relevant CVD score that determines the risk of developing a disease in the future and generate reports. Using the report data, a doctor should be able to construct a personalized care plan, which is available to the user via the platform.

As the patient receives the plan and sticks to it, they should continue to share relevant blood pressure measurements and other health info for the doctor to review. Based on the outcome, the healthcare worker tailors the care plan when necessary.

The solution should also provide healthcare professionals with the necessary back-office functionality to manage patients, review the check and report history, and invite new patients using the data from the facility’s EHR.

The Outcome

Developing software for a new company, Light IT Global’s experts had to take care of all the technical and creative aspects of the implementation process.

Create a fully-functioning MVP for an interactive healthcare platform where medics and patients can work together on preventing cardiovascular disease among the UK citizens

Work on the solution’s design and the company’s brand identity

Introduce responsive design to make the app accessible via desktop and mobile devices

Develop 5 user roles for patients, GPs, healthcare facility staff members, and admins, each with a unique dashboard and exclusive functionality

Implement multiple types of charts to improve data visualization

Develop a healthcare data analysis algorithm based on predictive risk models, which will instantly calculate an accurate CVD score for each user

Provide the healthcare facility managers with a tool to track and compare various important performance metrics (patient coverage, user engagement, clinician engagement)

Business Challenge

While cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, leading to about 32% of all global deaths, the healthcare technology market still doesn’t have enough effective solutions that would focus on CVD prevention. The main reason for that is the necessity for long-term monitoring and multilevel data analysis, which is complex and does not guarantee immediate results.

At the same time, software that would simplify the CVD prevention process would be highly beneficial not only for the global population and the healthcare industry in general but also for other business domains as well. One of the greatest examples is the insurance sector. By providing their clients with a convenient tool that would lower the risk of illness or death caused by an undiagnosed cardiovascular issue, the insurance companies will lower the claim costs, create a more balanced risk pool and improve customer retention rate.

Our client was willing to fill in the existing gap in the healthcare market of the UK by presenting a feature-packed one-stop interactive platform. The tool should give doctors and patients an opportunity to work together on getting better health outcomes for the people who are at risk of developing CVD.

The SAAS application should be easy to use and intuitive enough to keep the patients engaged and powerful enough to process thousands of records and provide the doctors with valuable insights that would simplify the interaction with the patient.

The result of health data analysis should be presented in the form of a personalized care plan a patient would be able to follow to improve their health and lower the risk of CVD. Consequently, the number of healthier people will gradually grow, and the CVD rates will decrease.

Implementation

To provide our client with the best solution possible, Light IT Global started the implementation process with careful business analysis to define possible obstacles that may appear during the development or prevent our client from achieving commercial success.

The design team worked closely with the client’s representatives to create a sleek modern visual style and brand identity that reflects the company’s core values. While the tech crew analyzed a multitude of ML scenarios, selected the optimal model to ensure accurate predictions and set up all the necessary integrations for the platform.

Light IT Global developed the solution using Python for the back-end and React for the front-end. Such a choice is explained by the project’s specifics. Python offers many additional development instruments that make healthcare software development easier and faster. React, on the other hand, has proven to be very effective in terms of building highly interactive interfaces (which our client required).

As the platform should have been ready for NHS integration, our tech experts paid close attention to interoperability requirements (specifically FHIR) and security measures.

Integration with EMIS (one of the most popular EHR providers in the UK) was also a must to simplify several processes within the platform:

New users invitation

Patients’ info extraction

Invitation success rate measurement

The UI/UX experts also worked in tandem with the developers to come up with an intuitive interface that gets the job done in a matter of a few clicks.

Solution Delivered

Upon the project’s completion, our client received a fully-functioning MVP of a web-based healthcare solution targeted towards healthcare workers and people who are either at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease or just want to stay in control in terms of their health.

The core of the system is a highly-accurate ML-powered risk prediction model that is flexible and adaptable enough to process large volumes of data efficiently. Convenient third-party services integrations serve as an additional boost for the practitioners allowing them to have all the necessary information at hand.

Doctors, managers, and patients log into the system and get access to a personalized dashboard with all the information/functionality that might be needed.

Patients are able to pass a quick health quiz to assess their current condition displayed as a CVD score (normal, elevated, highly elevated). They also can track their blood pressure and symptoms and share info about harmful habits that may influence heart health (smoking, alcohol consumption, stress exposure) to receive a custom care plan developed by a doctor in accordance with the shared data.

Doctors can quickly and easily assess patients, invite new users, provide recommendations, prescribe medications, and give directions all within the platform. A messaging system prevents miscommunication between the parties.

Hospital management, in its turn, gets access to all of the patients' and clinicians’ data, is able to keep track of the staff’s performance, engagement and satisfaction rates as well as the outcomes of the prevention practices.

Business Outcome

The successful completion of the MVP development allowed our client to move from the pre-seed to the seed stage. The software is fully functional, ready to scale, and perfectly illustrates a business idea showcasing all its benefits.

One of the greatest benefits that safeguard the product’s uniqueness and marketability is a simple and accessible digital form. An easy-to-use app makes a state-of-the-art predictive risk model available to the general public (which is typically not the case).

The solution’s architecture ensures scalability and easy addition of new features when it's needed, so the business owner is free to choose any strategy they find compelling and promising.

The platform opens many opportunities for advantageous collaborative partnerships as CVD prevention-oriented software can be utilized and promoted not only by healthcare facilities and insurance companies but by fitness & wellness industry players and educational and governmental institutions.

Considering the fact that our client’s product targets a large percentage of the demographics while simultaneously offering a wide range of unique benefits to everyone using it (doctors, patients, hospital management, insurance companies), it can be commercially successful on the national market and beyond it.

At the same time, the result of a successful customer acquisition/market expansion for such a product will be positive not only from the business perspective. The potentially growing number of people who are proactive with their health can lead to better outcomes for society as a whole, increasing the lifespan, improving the quality of life, boosting productivity, and contributing to the national economical growth.
