Project Summary

About Client

Our client is one of the subsidiaries of the largest cord blood bank in Europe. It’s a stem cell bank providing services related to stem cell acquisition, processing and storage. The cells are taken from umbilical cord blood and other fetal tissues like cord tissue, placenta or placenta blood. The material can later be used by a donor or their family members in case of a medical emergency.

The company has been operating in Europe since 2002 and, at the moment, has 10+ laboratory facilities across the EU. It also partners with 1500+ hospitals in different European countries.

Since 2014 our client also creates advanced medical products (ATMP) based on mesenchymal stem cells acquired from voluntary donors.

Client Request

Our client was working on revamping their CRM and required assistance with ensuring an adequate QA process for it. They already had a small in-house QA team, but the available engineers weren’t competent enough to perform complex testing and safeguard the best quality of the final product.

For that reason, they contacted Light IT Global and requested to work with our most experienced QA engineers. The experts were responsible both for completing all the emerging tasks and mentoring the existing team.

The Outcome

The result of Light IT Global’s work on this project was not just a thoroughly tested software that meets all of the strict security requirements that apply to healthcare solutions. It also included well-thought-out QA processes established by our engineers from scratch and the transfer of experience to a less qualified team.

Established integration testing approaches

Mentored manual QA engineers to help them acquire the necessary skills needed to perform automation testing effectively

Conducted automation GUI tests to ensure the system’s fail-safeness and functionality

Performed requirements gathering and translated the requirements into comprehensive test scenarios and test cases

Provided regression autotests to validate the migration process

Business Challenge

When it comes to digital products for the healthcare industry the matter of data protection should be the highest priority for any business. And in this regard, the quality of the code is just as important as the comprehensiveness of the quality assurance process. However, in comparison to the developers, QA engineers are often overlooked by business owners and may not even be included in the in-house IT team.

This is exactly the issue our client faced when they started to work on revamping their existing CRM. Their dev crew successfully completed the code migration process, but the existing QA team was not competent enough to ensure the top quality of the final product.

They required assistance from a team that has experience developing compliant healthcare solutions for the European market and is proficient in introducing the most effective QA methods and techniques.

As the CRM of a stem cell bank contains sensitive information of qualified donors (personal, financial, and health-related data), there was a need to incorporate the most relevant privacy and security mechanisms. Being a part of a major healthcare brand, our client already had well-established business processes, and a revamped solution should be easily integrated into the existing framework.

That is why the efficient and well-thought-out work of the QA team became a key element of the development process, and the engagement of a reliable third-party IT vendor was necessary for the project’s success.

Implementation

Light IT Global’s QA team started the implementation by collaborating with stakeholders to understand the system requirements and translate them into in-depth test scenarios and test cases. This helped to build an easy-to-follow step-by-step strategy that is clear even for the less proficient testers.

The integration testing approaches establishment required designing and implementing strategies and frameworks that would provide seamless integration between different components of the system.

By utilizing automation tools and frameworks, such as Selenium and Pytest, we created a suite of regression tests that can be executed efficiently and significantly reduce the need for manual work during regression testing.

At the end-to-end level of the Test Automation Pyramid, we conducted automation GUI tests to verify that all functional scenarios worked as expected. Our engineers developed robust test scripts that interacted with the system’s graphical user interface to simulate user actions and validate the behaviour and functionality of the application. By automating these tests, we ensured comprehensive coverage of the user workflows and minimized the risk of human error.

While working on all of the tasks mentioned above, Light IT Global’s team members collaborated closely with our client’s in-house testers. Within 4 months, we provided guidance, training, and mentorship to manual testers. This allowed our client to continue the solution’s support in the future without putting the system’s stability in jeopardy.

Solution Delivered

At the end of a 4 months cooperation period, our client received a fully-functional revamped CRM. All the protected health information in it is stored securely. They also got a streamlined workflow in the in-house QA department and an upgraded, more skilful team to continue supporting the system.

The software’s code was completely refactored, and due to the introduction of regression autotests, all of the existing functionality remained intact after said migration. This helped our client’s team to effortlessly switch to an updated solution without any negative impact on the client acquisition processes' efficiency.

Utilizing a security model built around objectives, commonly known as CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and a risk-based analysis approach, Light IT Global promoted objective identification of security controls that need to be applied. As a result, our client is now able to identify the possible risks and respond to them in a proactive manner.

Business Outcome

An updated, fully secure CRM simplified the interaction between our client’s staff and potential donors. The contract signing process has been automated, which increased operational efficiency. At the moment, our client’s company has managed to store more than 850,000 cord blood and other tissue units, perform 187 cord blood transplantations and infusions, and help over 4500 patients around the world.

The introduction of well-tested software helps to facilitate the company’s growth and increase the number of partners/laboratories in different countries in Europe. Established business processes backed up by cutting-edge digital products advance brand recognition and boost the level of trust from the target audience.
