Project Summary

About Client

Our client provides innovative digital tools for chronic pain disease management since 2013. The products offered by the company utilize innovative technology, such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning to help the users not only take their symptoms under control but also understand the triggers to prevent future attacks and share all of the accumulated data with health professionals for more precise and quick diagnosis.

At the moment, our client focuses on migraine tracking app development that can be accessed via Android and iOS devices. The number of users has officially exceeded 3 million, with more than 300 million recorded health events in total.

Client Request

Light IT Global was chosen by our client as an experienced and trustworthy healthcare software development provider that can develop a migraine tracking app from scratch and revamp an outdated application as well.

The software that our client invested in prior to working with Light IT Global required updating and working on new features to improve its marketability. Other issues that required resolving included bug fixing, synchronization flow re-work, user experience improvement, performance optimization, animation work, and more.

The Outcome

While our team still continues to develop a migraine tracking app, there are multiple tasks that were successfully implemented and incorporated into the existing application, making the product even more user-friendly and appealing to the audience.

Light IT Global was trusted to take care of the following technical aspects:

Migrate the existing code from Java to Kotlin

Perform code refactoring

Enhance application performance speed (decrease loading time, boost synchronization time)

Ensure uninterrupted communication between different parts of the application (existing and new features developed using React Native)

Upgrade software libraries

Improve synchronization flow

Redesign multiple screens of the application

Develop new features per the client’s request

Business Challenge

Studies show that about 10% of the global population suffer from migraine. In the US alone, the number of people experiencing migraine symptoms on a regular basis is over 39 million. Yet the variety of useful and precise mobile migraine trackers is not that impressive, and many potential users of said software still haven’t found their ideal digital solution. Our client is willing to fill the existing gap by developing a migraine tracking app that would be convenient, free, and easily accessible via mobile devices.

The software provided by our client stands out among the competition as it includes not only basic tracking features but also allows to analyze the information, determine specific migraine patterns and triggers, and export all the gathered data to transfer it to the chosen healthcare provider.

Consequently, the application should be useful not only for individuals but for medical facilities as well, letting them offer access to on-demand software to their patients.

Implementation

Once Light IT Global started working on the project, the tech team had to tackle several different migraine tracking app development tasks at once. While one part of the crew handled code refactoring and code migration, the other implemented new features using React Native.

Transferring the existing code, which was written in Java, to Kotlin improved the application’s stability, ensure data integrity and a higher level of security. Code refactoring, in its turn, helps to make the code concise and easy to work with during the migraine tracking app development process without compromising the application’s performance. App’s stability was a priority for our client as the solution is currently used by more than 3 million people, and even minor problems during the migraine tracking app development stage would have a negative impact on the satisfaction rate.

Multiple elements of the application required a redesign and thorough implementation, which was delivered by our experts (e.g., home screen and export screens redesign). The ability to share migraine status and change the password are among the features that were developed from scratch and incorporated into the app.

One of the major bottlenecks in the existing application was a corrupted synchronization flow, which lead to unacceptable delays in the login process. Transferring the data synchronization process into the background mode helped to resolve this issue.

Apart from developing a migraine tracking app itself, Light IT Global’s team also works on a multitude of minor mundane tasks like lib upgrades, bug fixes, and color scheme changes.

Solution Delivered

The feature-packed mobile migraine tracker is available for Android and iOS devices. The users can track their symptoms, define which external factors may be triggering for them (weather, food, level of stress, hours of sleep, etc.), create different types of reports, and send those to the chosen medical professional (Migraine Impact Report, Migraine Listing Report, Advanced reports, etc.).

The solution can also be used by healthcare providers as an additional tool that simplifies diagnostics. A convenient dashboard contains all the data a doctor might reference during checkups.

Due to the introduced changes in the app’s codebase and workflow logic, the solution became faster, easier to use, and more precise when it comes to the attack’s assessment. Newly developed features are seamlessly integrated with the existing functionality, while redesigned elements made the user journey more intuitive and effective.

Business Outcome

From a business perspective, all the changes Light IT Global has made while developing a migraine tracking app brought two major benefits for our client. The first one is a notable improvement in the application’s performance, which lead to growing customer satisfaction and more interest in the app from new users. During the time our team has been working on the app, more than 100,000 new users registered.

Another benefit is the complete introduction of functionality that streamlines data export and communication between individuals and their healthcare providers. As a result, our client received another monetization option catering the software not only to people willing to manage their migraine symptoms but to medical facilities as well. At the same time, the app remains free, as our client utilizes a freemium monetization strategy.

The application has already received positive reviews from multiple popular online media like The American Journal of Managed Care, Women’s Health, and Healthline. And as the popularity of the app keeps growing, the recognition, as well as brand awareness, will increase as well.
